Well, my sister and I are off to Egypt again soon; we are booked into the Sheraton Cairo Towers and Casino Hotel. Does anyone have any experience of the hotel, and can tell me what it's like? Also I know they have a tour desk - is it possible to arrange trips (we want a full day at the museum!) when we get there? We are only staying for four nights, and want to cram as much as we can into our time. I have tried to email the hotel, but the message came back to me "undeliverable". Any and all help and advice gratefully received! Liz} |

Dear Elizabeth: I have never stayed at that hotel, but as you say, I am sure they have a tour desk in the lobby that can arrange things for you. I also know that Thomas Cook Co, who usually has an office in major hotels, can do this. If you have not been to the Museum before, it would be better to "take a tour" with a knowledgable guide so that you will see the best things and not waste time. The signage on things is not good at the Museum, and you need a guide to explain things unless you have done a lot of studying on your own ahead of time. Don't try to walk to the Museum, even though the distance may seem short on a map. You will encounter the worst traffic on the way. Good Luck. Bonnie |

It's a very good hotel. I've stayed there during various productions. It is shaped the Columbia Record Company building in Hollywood (round, like an album), and sits on the Nile (in the water!) and has views of the Giza Pyramids (through the smog) and of course the Nile & Cairo. The outdoor restaurant has the Nile flowing right under your feet, and the hotel is within walking distance of Gold's Gym, The Fish Market restaurant and the home of the late President, Anwar Sadat. It is notorious for its extremely tight security, rumored to be the best in Cairo. All cars are searched inside & out, top, bottom & underneath. Try the coffee & pastry shop...tell Samia, I said hello. Also, try the restaurant next door, it has excellent freshly baked bread and grilled meats. |

Thanks, Bonnie and Jack, for your advice. We're really looking forward to it - and we definitely won't be walking to the museum! We intend to do some research on the interior layout etc. and find out what's where before we go, so we don't waste any time wandering about! I will also say hello to Samia for you, Jack, and try the bread and meats from the restaurant next door. You say you stayed there during productions...documentaries?? It's nice to have the benefit of other people's experience and opinions on Cairo and the hotel we're booked into - I'm a widow, and although only in my fifties, I am just a little nervous about travelling without my husband. But the lure of this country's unique history was too much... Thankyou again, Liz |
