The Health Ministry reminds travelers to Sinai and Egypt to get vaccinations against hepatitis A following an outbreak of the viral disease among such Israeli tourists recently. Egypt and Sinai are considered high-risk areas for hepatitis A, thus the ministry recommends the vaccination even for those who make short trips. It is given in two shots spaced six to 12 months from each other, but one dose provides protection for a year. Hepatitis A is an infectious disease passed by infected water or food and from person-to-person. Besides the vaccination, travelers should also take care to drink water from safe sources such as bottled water or to boil water for five minutes or use disinfection tablets; eat eggs, fish, poultry and meat that are well cooked; washing fresh fruit and vegetables in soapy water or when they are cooked; eating milk products only if they are pasteurized and are from recognizable sources. |
