Hi all,

Hoping someine can help me with a bit of inside info. I'm heading out for my first trip to Egypt, Luxor is my first stop in early April for a few weeks (not sure how long yet, at least two). I'm going to spend most of my time in Luxor but I also want to travel down to Aswan and also up to Al Minya - does anyone know if this is possible without hiring a car ? all the info I found on trains etc don't show Al Minya as a stop...

I guess that you can travel via the Nile to most destinations anyone know how expensive this is ?

Also its a long shot but what are odds of being able to work on a dig whilst I'm out there (I'll pay my own costs etc - free labour !!)

Thanks and if anyone else is travelling out around the 3rd April and wants to meet for a drink drop me a line..

Richard

Hi,
I am Chris i am 14 years old and also visited
Egypt (Luxor) what hotel are u staying at? I will give u 1 small tip near the winter palace hotel there is a guide shop (near the thomas cook) do not hire a guide from hear they r not worth it.
R u a archeologist if u r it is possible to go on to a dig if ur not then you may be able to search through some rubble from a excuvation (this is also very exiting)

E-mail me Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm planning on spending very little time in the hotel so I opted for the cheapest (St Josephs's)

At the moment I'm on my last year of a degree course in Egyptology so maybe i can bluff my way onto a dig whilst I'm out there (Again if anyone has any contact details it would be appericated) otherwise I would settle for just going through the rubble / labour work (are these offered locally ??)

thanks

Richard

Richard,
In order to work in Egypt you must be approved by the SCA and have your application and security papers cleared months in advance of the excavation season. By long agreement all the "labour work" is done by Egyptian workmen and they would resent you taking a job that is reserved for them.
To join an excavation you need to apply in advance to work with a university or other organization doing research or conservation work in Egypt.

Richard,
Don't hold your breath unless you have prior experience and the requisite education/specialty. The SCA is pretty strict on this in applications - probably the strictest in the world.

Hi Richard

I've just come back form El-Minya, it is not normally accessible to the regular tourist, I was on a specialised trip.
While we were there even to leave the hotel at night for a walk we had an armed escort.
If you are going to Luxor and want to stay on the cheap DO NOT STAY AT THE GADDIS the food is abysmal amongst other problems. An exceptionally good hotel is the Pharoan in Karnak, small faimly run with food quality the equivalent of any 5 star in town.
Enjoy your stay, if you don't look in the mirror for the reason why you didn't.
