Just curious on this but, is there some way to volounteer with digs in Egypt? Basically a way to go to Egypt, and get a chance to work with the professionals, such as Mr. Hawass on a dig, without having to pay a fortune? God only knows that not all of us have extra thousands of dollars laying around, so we can go have an "adventure" lol. The reason I'm asking though, is, I want to be an archaeologist. I have wanted to be one since, geeze, since I can remember. More specifically I want to be an Egyptologist. There is something special about Egypt and its history. It's unlike any other and it's something that I want to spend my life learning about and preserving so that I can, in turn teach others about it. Anyway, I'm asking about this because if there was a way I could do this and get experience by helping people like Mr. Hawass out on digs, then I'd take it in a heartbeat. So if anyone has any helpful feedback, I'd appreciate it.

Darby,
Unfortunately--no. Some countries do accept volunteers on digs, but they contribute money as part of the income to pay for the dig. In Egypt "volunteers' would be taking the jobs of the Egyptian workmen, an important source of income for families that have produced several generations of skilled excavators.

Hmm I see your point, thanks for the info George. Still I think that if someone could set a program like that up, that it would be awsome. People that are interested in archaeology and want a chance to learn, but dont necessarily have the money to pay to be involved with a dig, could have a chance to be involved and learn. Who knows heh, maybe someday :)

Darby,
I am with you. I dream of visiting Egypt and its ancient splendors at least once a day. Unfortunately, I too do not have the finances at this time to put this dream into action, and have wondered if there was any such program. I am currently a history major and my goal is to attend the University of Memphis to obtain my Masters and Doctrine in Egyptology. I hope to one day teach to college students the magnificence of the Ancient Egpytians. I wish you good luck in your endeavors and hope you too are able to fulfill your goal of someday standing on the sands of ancient times.

Darby,
I also would like to work in Egypt. As of now I'm an undergrad archaeology major and will be doing my field work in Israel next year. I've learned it's quite difficult to find work in Egypt for the reason George mentioned. As far as money goes, I recieve grants and student loans. It's not easy, but nothing ever is, and at times I've questioned my sanity. Best wishes!
