Yet another question... How easy/dificult will it be for me to get online in Egypt? I know I'll need to get adapters for the power, but do I need phone cord adapters if I want to get online with my notebook? Or is it easiest to use those internet cafes? My husbands family has a computer, but I know they don't have internet access... and this posed a problem last year when we went. Do most Egyptians NOT have internet? Corinne |

well just using my laptop to write this message on the internet via Luxor westbank on a privat line. If you run a laptop of your own check with your homeprovider if they have partners or even a connection in Egypt. This way I use AOL (which I do not use at home) and get connected here in Egypt the normal way using same software, just unplugged the normal telephone and plugged it into my laptop. Make sure if in Upper Egypt AOL is slow by using the Luxor connection (9600 b/sec), so I use the Cairo dial number to get connected to the Net at proper speed. In case you are in Upper Egypt make sure the phone is able to connect with Cairo and not just available for local calls. Internet-Cafes are cheap...would be another possibility, even they are slow with their connection using a network (many computer via one server). I will leave Egypt tomorrow, but will be back end of March. greetinx Sonny |

Sonny, so basicly... my best bet is to get AOL on my laptop, find out what their Egyptian dial up numbers are, and just plug in.... gotcha! Thanks! Corinne |

Corinne, AOl will do that automatically when you tell the program from which country you want to connect...but extra charges, so phonenumbers of Egypt are already in AOL software. You might have to call up all Cairo numbers till you get a connection, but it worked fine. Highest speed I got was 48800 b/sec. greetinx Sonny |

Corinne, before I forget. There are free providers in Egypt (Cairo) now and it is said that till end of March they all can be dialed up via local call in all Egypt. As soon as I have detailed info (next 48 hours I think)I will place it in here. greetinx Sonny |

Internet access is FREE (although the phone call is not)since mid-January, at least in Cairo and Alex. I am not sure when it is going to reach the rest of Egypt, they say by the end of the year. I think in most cases, an account with AOL will be a waste of money, because you will still have to pay for the local phone call |

Nicole, I tried last week from Luxor to get into these free internet accesses...no chance so far...so I had to use AOL...but as you said....if staying in Alex or Cairo, than there will be no prob at all. greetinx Sonny |

Nicole, how then do I access the internet for free? I'll be staying in an apartment in Cairo with my husbands family. How much do the phone calls cost? I'd hate to burden family with extra cost, and I'm sure they won't accept money from me to cover it. Corinne |

Before the 14th of January 2002, the costs for a local phone call was 6 minutes = 10 piasters now the costs for a local phone call is 3 minutes = 10 piaster To log on to the internet one needs to dial one of the numbers the ISPs in Egypt are offering. The all start with 07. The ISP is getting 60% and the Telecom company gets 40% of the phonebill. It is available only for Cairo, Giza, 6th of October City. More cities to come. I do have all the specific 07-numbers, here are some of them: Egyptian Data Transfer 07777777 LINKdotNET 07770777 MenaNet Networks 07070707 Raya Communications 07770000 MisrNet 07770888 Yalla 07774444 Access 07770999 Al Ahram Investment 07070505 Egyptian Internet 07770555 Hope that is enough for the moment. greetinx Sonny (from 7th March onwards again in Upper Egypt...just for a few days) |

All the ISP numbers work now for Luxor as well. I just got back, lines from Luxor were kind of slow but acceptable. greetinx Sonny |
