Hi all,

I'm just after tips from people who have already visited Luxor. I'm there at the moment (currently staying in St Joesph's) I arrived last wednesday (Sat today) and have been round both of the temples.

I am planning on doing the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens next week (over a couple of days) but I also want to travel to Abydos.

I hear that there can be some problems with the police when trying to reach Abydos, anyone know about this ? I've got a 4x4 over here and was just planning on taking a run up, but some people (Thompson reps) say I must sign on for a tour ??

is this true ? or are they just promoting their own tours ?

Other than that it's fantastic over here never been to Luxor before (Cario plenty but never down south so to speak). Anyone got any other ideas /places I must visit whilst I'm here ?

I'll be sure to let you all know how the holiday went, maybe those of you who haven't been before will get some idea of what it's like...

thanks

Richard

Deir El Medina would be on my list.

Others here are better equiped with experience to answer your Abydos question, but it is my understanding that escorts are indeed required for travel there.

Have a great time!

If you go to Medinet Habu call in on the Ramesseum, The tombs of the Nobles are quite near. But most of all spend 100 pounds and go visit the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens, it is spectacular!

Richard,

When I went to Adydos in Dec '90 no escort was necessary. But when I went April, 2000 you were not allowed to travel without one. It is still worth the effort (my favorite site in all of Egypt). There is a tourism office in Luxor located not far from the Luxor temple. Check in with them on restrictions.

Also in Luxor don't miss the temple of Seti I. It is not one of the more often visited, but is truly one of the better ones. Also if you do make it to Deir el Medina (Workman's village) don't skip going into one of the tombs. It's like they were painted yesterday. Truly exquisite.

Look forward to hearing about your trip in the future. Inshallah!

And don't forget the Worker's Village & Tombs in Medinet Habu. An excellent guide and "fixer" is Ali Hassan Sheba, in Medinet Habu (my brother; cell # available if needed). If you get hungry while visiting Queen Hatshepsut's place, there is an excellent little mom & pop's restaurant in Medinet Habu, with great home made bread, salads and crisp, oven roasted duck! Also, if you're feeling a bit under the weather (Pharaoh's Revenge), Dr. Boutros in Medinet Habu, is the physcian to see. I know from personal experience last May, when he brought me kicking and screaming back from the Afterlife.
