I am planning a trip to Egypt in the next year. It has been my dreams since I was a child. I have heard that many Egyptians speak French. Is this true? Would like to learn enough language to be able to communicate basics with an Egyptian. What language should I study? Any other advice for a first time traveller would be welcome. |

Of course you will find a lot of people taking a little bit French, German or Italian, and so on, but Lingua franca (for tourist) is English. There is no need to learn another language for a basic communication, however, the Egyptians are pleased if you would learn some basic words or phrases in (egyptian) Arabic. Have a nice stay, Iufaa |

Yeah, Arabic would be the most useful. But there is no need to study French or German although you will find some tourists speak it. Many Egyptians will be appreciative if you know little catch frases but don't worry about it. Just enjoy your stay. Kelsey* |

Does anyone recommend a woman travelling alone (or with a tour) in Egypt? Lorraine |

Depends on the type of woman ... But a guided tour with any decent travel agency plus some common sense would get you there and back without any hastle. If you are looking for real adventure, take a day off and rent a car in Cairo. |
