I don't mean this to sound like an ad, but the American University in Cario Press has published "A Traveller's Guide to the Geology of Egypt" written by one of our board members, Bonnie Sampsell. I have been studying Ancient Egypt for 30 years and this is the first book I have found which connects the geology of the country with ancient Egypt's history. The books covers the geological history of the area, and the specific geology of the country starting from Upper Egypt and working north. Bonnie makes a very convincing arguement that the pyramids locations where based primarily on proximity to a source of core building material - quarries. And she explains the source for the different types of stone used by the Egyptians as building material and how the stone got there in the first place. And she tries to put to rest again the theory of the older Sphinx. This book adds a new dimension to the typical Ancient Egyptian subjects; a dimension which has long been missing. Charlie |
