Andrew:

We are all so glad to see the BB back up and running. I really missed it.

While it was "out," an article that I wrote for Al Ahram about my trip to Sinai last May appeared. Perhaps others will be interested in learning more about this area, which is not on most of the usual tours of Egypt.

All: I read Bonnie's article and it was indeed a fascinating trip!
Also read her book, "The Geology of Egypt, A traveler's guide". If you haven't read it, you are in for a treat!

One of the many detailed 'tidbits' in the book states, "The core blocks come from strata of limestone with different characteristics that affected their resistance to the weathering processes. Some of the blocks were cut from a hard dense limestone"..."The superiority of this rock was evidently recognized, since it was used especially as corner blocks on the core of each course." (Not that we don't already have a great respect for the perfectionism of the GTP's architect and engineers.)

The book sheds light on why the culture and civilization of Ancient Egypt took the unique paths that they did. Enriching.

An excellent article indeed, Bonnie ! Did you ever go to the main Old Kingdom mines in the Wadi Maghara ?
