At last, something on the "door".(I hope it's new!) I enjoyed reading this and hope you all do too. b.j. http://www.earthfiles.com/news/news.cfm?ID=397&category=Science This should probably belong in "The Upuaut Project", but as you know, for some reason one cannot post there. |

Janine, did you find the "handles" to be in different places? I thought they seemed to be about the same in each shaft, but in better condition. Also, did you notice the little "ridges" on the surface of the "third door"? Little things, I know, but sometimes these things seem to mean a lot. You are so knowledgable in so many things, I hope you have some thoughts on this. bj |

b.j. On the print out, the ridges didn't show at all...so went back and looked at the original URL. They look like accidental scratch marks. (JD should look at them. Hieratic? I don't think so, but I don't read them.) The mark on the left looks like part of an arc, but may be accidental. Yes, the holes for the handles do look a little differently placed, as if they were placed 'freehand'. These are odd handles. the one on the left is thicker, and the one on the right looks like a cotter pin, and dwindles to a narrow end...like a 'leading end', originally threaded through first one hole, then the other, and clipped back... Copper is so soft, I wonder if it did the intended job ? Did they have alloys then? (They did blend gold an silver to make electrum, but don't know when that started.) You're right, there are all kinds of little questions about the third door. Not a close fit at the top, like the others, either. Another puzzle is, that some blocks "looked like maybe there was water damage". Perhaps the absence of a close fit at the top had something to do with it. There was abundant rainfall during the 4th dyn,(sea level was on its way up, but hadn't peaked)...there may have been some storms, either during the building process or any of the violent storms that came later. (So! Not air-tight...reject!) Thanks for posting this, b.j... It's a curious little tid-bit.
